On February 1, 2024, AWS started to charge for every public IPv4 address, at $0.005 per IP per hour. Before that date, a public IPv4 address in use on a running resource had no charge. AWS charged for idle and extra Elastic IPs before the change, at the same $0.005 rate. At 730 hours a month, each public IPv4 address now costs about $3.65 a month, or $43.80 a year. The charge covers EC2, RDS, EKS nodes, and other services with a public IPv4 address. More vendors are on the vendor list.

Old and new prices

From the AWS News Blog announcement. Prices are per address, per hour, in US dollars.

Public IP address type Old price an hour New price an hour
In-use public IPv4 (Amazon provided or Elastic IP) on a resource in your VPC, Global Accelerator, or Site-to-site VPN No charge $0.005
Extra (secondary) Elastic IP on a running EC2 instance $0.005 $0.005
Idle Elastic IP in your account $0.005 $0.005

What the new charge costs, by our math at 730 hours a month:

Public IPv4 addresses Per month Per year
1 $3.65 $43.80
6 $21.90 $262.80
10 $36.50 $438

A 30-day month has 720 hours, so a short month costs $3.60 per address.

What AWS said

The AWS post says: "Effective February 1, 2024 there will be a charge of $0.005 per IP per hour for all public IPv4 addresses, whether attached to a service or not."

On Free Tier: "The AWS Free Tier for EC2 will include 750 hours of public IPv4 address usage per month for the first 12 months, effective February 1, 2024."

On scope, the post says the change applies to all AWS services that can have a public IPv4 address, in all AWS regions, including AWS China and GovCloud. AWS does not charge for addresses you own and bring to AWS with BYOIP.

Who it hits and when

What to do before your renewal

AWS bills by usage, so there is no renewal date. The charge shows on each monthly bill.

  1. Open Public IP Insights in Amazon VPC IP Address Manager. AWS launched it with this change to show every public IPv4 address in your account.
  2. Release idle Elastic IPs you do not need.
  3. Move instances that do not need a public address behind a load balancer or NAT, or use private subnets.
  4. Use IPv6 where your clients support it. The new charge is for IPv4 addresses.
  5. Compare with other clouds. Linode raised extra IPv4 from $1 to $2 a month in 2023. See our Linode price increase 2023 guide.
